Julian Alvarez Shines as Manchester City Destroys Burnley
- Manchester City continues their winning ways with an emphatic win against relagation contenders, Burnley.
- Earling Haaland was lethargic on his return from injury.
Man City star, Erling Haaland made a brief cameo at Etihad Stadium, making his first appearance since breaking his foot in the loss against Aston Villa on December 6.
While Alvarez celebrated turning 24 in style, the Norwegian striker did not make a major contribution as he squandered his only chance of the game by miss kicking the ball.
Alvarez was named man-of-the-match as he scored a brace, thereby writing his name in the history books by becoming just the tenth player to score two goals or more on their birthday in a Premier League game
Burnley manager, and former City captain, Vincent Kompany, should have been impressed with the way his team persevered until the very end.
At least they managed to secure a late consolation goal, as defender Ameen Al-Dakhil scored their first goal in seven trips to this stadium since 2018. But in the end, they were unable to prevent second-placed City from winning their eighth game in a row in all competitions, as well as their 13th straight triumph over Burnley, who are currently in second from last.
Although they have a game in hand, City is five points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Manager Pep Guardiola is not only worried about Liverpool, but Arsenal, as well, and he feels his team needs to go on a big winning streak to secure the title.
“With this Liverpool that we have faced for eight years, and Arsenal, with Mikel [Arteta] who has settled his squad, I don’t have the feeling that they’re going to drop much points,” he said.
“We have to win as many games as possible and, at the end, we will see what happens.”
